Canada, with five boys from Burnaby, defeated Mexico 13-9 in their opening game of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., Friday.
The team from Hastings Community Little League, whose catchment area includes North Burnaby up to Sperling Ave., and north of the Lougheed Highway, scored seven runs in the first inning in a game that not only had lots of offence, but several good defensive plays.
The Mexicans, however, rebounded with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game 8-8 before the Canadian kids settled down and cruised to the victory despite surrendering four home runs.
Burnaby's Steven Morretto had three singles, drew two walks, including a base-loaded one win the sixth inning, and scored twice. Another Burnaby boy, Cole Dalla-Zanna scored four runs getting on base twice with hits and twice with walks. Ataru Yamaguchi of Vancouver went the final four innings to get the win.
Dalla-Zanna started the game and was tagged with two earned runs, one hit and three walks in one-plus inning of pitching. Later in the second inning, Moretto took to the mound to stop the bleeding allowing two hits and and one earned run over two-thirds of an inning.
Leadoff hitter Kobly Buljevic of Burnaby had a hit and drove in a run as well as making some nifty defensive plays at third base. Carson Ho from Burnaby had a hit, a walk and scored two runs while Noah Hanson-Stafford scored a run.
Canada will next meet the winner of a game later Friday between Uganda and Panama on the international side of the double-knockout tournament. That game will start at 9 a.m. PT and will be broadcast on TSN2.
