How Would YOU Fix Skyrim? | Gameforumer.com: Latest Games ...

Not too long ago, we published our thoughts on how Bethesda might go about fixing some of Skyrim?s more significant issues ? if not with a patch for Skyrim, then at least when The Elder Scrolls VI rolls around in a few years. Some of them were practical, nitty-gritty suggestions, while others were more an act of free association. And you? well, you had many opinions about our thoughts. Both the 1UP community and a number of Elder Scrolls fans at Reddit had plenty to say about our piece and where Bethesda should take the franchise. We?ve rounded up the most thoughtful (and civil!) responses below; turns out you folks have some well-informed and interesting ideas about Skyrim. We?d like to play your version of the game.

Do something with your septims in Tamriel
Thoughts from 1UP member 00grifter

The amount of time spent leveling smithing skills should be more ridiculous than what it is. The problem I have is when I leave town to go back to questing, all of a sudden my character is somehow stronger, making the enemies that much stronger. Smithing shouldn?t be a part of leveling. But they should make it a much more rewarding job, i.e. a real in-game job from which you can take over the business and have orders to fill. I hated how they said you can get jobs in Skyrim, like it was somehow rewarding. You can sell all the equipment in your world and have thousands of septims, but what do you do with it?

I think Todd Howard and Bethesda need to spend some more time figuring out what makes the game interesting. More game mechanics and less random quests. Social standing was big in medieval times and just having money made you somebody, but it seems like in Skyrim you get rewarded with killing things with the ability to have more things to kill with a more powerful sword or spell. Woo hoo. The Civil War and guild quests were interesting, but I think they could have tied them together more with the world of Skyrim and the ability to interact with it. The fact that the game is open-world yet not an MMORPG doesn?t make Bethesda really imagine what they can do with a game world this big.

Add some depth to the game. They said that no two people would have the same character, explore the same areas, and basically be the same adventurer. I don?t see it. Add some real depth. Imagine you were creating the world of Tamriel. How would they interact? Kingdoms, lords, factions, politics, vendors of all kinds, mentors, apprenticeships, creating your own guild? All of these could be DLC and tied into the game. Look at the Fallout 3 series of DLC. Very cool stuff I think, but it all could be tied into a world that your continuously changing. Make it seem as if that bustling town or city actually has a purpose other than to tell you that they want you to kill 20 beasts. Too many ideas for improvements in my head. Skyrim is definitely a dulled-down RPG that has too many elements focused on combat. It?s as if they wanted a football fanatic to stop playing football on the 360 and play this. Give us our RPG back, Todd Howard.

I want dialogue options
Thoughts from 1UP member mastertmg

The chance to do something other than straightforward quests is really missing. Fallout: New Vegas had options in spades, and this feels like a giant leap backwards.?

I don?t really feel like my character has much of a personality, since I didn?t really have to make any big decisions other than, ?Do I want to finish this quest?? Even when I didn?t want to finish it, I usually can?t tell the quest-giver to go to hell.

Combat
Thoughts from 1UP member Revrant

?This is something?Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning?gets oh-so-right??

Ew, no, that game?s combat is boring Fable derivative crap. Why would I want generic action combat in a deep RPG experience? ?That Dark Messiah and Warband get oh-so-right? is what you should have said.

??they transform it into something far meatier than the?Oblivion/World of Warcraft?Lite derivative it seems to be at first glance.?

Again, no, flash-in-the-pan action junk is not ?meatier,? it?s just a different approach, and who the heck wants that kind of goofy crap in a serious RPG experience? Can you imagine The Witcher 2 with Bayonetta/Fable action combat with 10-foot swords and explosive colors? People would hate it. That sort of thing has a place, and it isn?t in serious RPGs.

Skyrim?s Combat
Thoughts from Redditor Maniacal

Dark Messiah of Might Magic?s system would be more or less perfect for Skyrim, not button-mashy third-person one with a shield stored in your butt.

Static World
Thoughts from Redditor soulforged42

Other than the first two, I really think these are pretty bad ways to improve the game. I don?t really get what they really want to do about the melee combat. Sure, it?s not overly flashy, but if I wanted to play a third-person fancy hack and slash, I?d go play that. Don?t try to force the TES series to be something it?s not and shouldn?t be. Respeccing also would be so out of place in the TES series. It?s be useful to an extent but I wouldn?t want it in Skyrim. As for the scaling, sometimes I miss the static world of Morrowind. Sure, the scaling in Skyrim could use some tweaking but this seems like a minor issue, nothing worth being thrown on this list.
