Qualification Path for Fencing at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, when the teams will be selected for the fencing competition?

Team events consist of teams of 3 fencers alternating with 1. A total of eight teams in each competition in the team event (9 if China does not qualify a team directly). The first 4 teams in the world rankings qualify directly selected for the Olympic Games. The remaining four teams on the basis of regional qualifying. The top teams from each region (North and South America, Asia, Europe, Africa) that have not already qualified will earn a place regionally.

The event is an individualTournament with a field of 39 fencers. For each competition qualify 24 fencers who participated in the team competition. Are chosen according to the first 24 fencers qualify, the top 3 world rankings, with only one fencer from any one country. The next 7 are from the Olympic zones as the top 2 from Europe, 2 from Asia, two from the North and South America, Africa and 1, re-drawn with only 1 fencer in the country. The remaining 5 slots are determined by a continental qualifyingCompetition with 2 from Europe and one from each of the other regions.

What about the men's foil and women's sword?

Another set of criteria is used to the 24 fencers to compete in foil sword collect male and female events. Since there is no team competition, each must qualify their merits and not on the ranking of their national team. The following formula is used to collect the 24 individual items:

The 8 top the world rankings (max.2 from each country)

Top 3 individuals from Europe

Top 2 individuals from Asia-Oceania

Top 2 individuals from the North / South America

Top 1 person from Africa

The last 8 qualify for continental competitions where countries that have not qualified any fencers on the first two rounds. In the last round, the allocation of slots remains at 3 Europe, 2 in Asia and America, and one for Africa.
