NEW YORK (AP) ? A woman who snatched a newborn from a hospital more than two decades ago and raised the child as her own was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison by a judge who called it a "crime of selfishness" that enhanced parents' fears and forced hospitals to boost security.
Ann Pettway, of Raleigh, N.C., nodded her head repeatedly as U.S. District Judge Kevin P. Castel announced his sentence in a Manhattan courtroom packed with relatives and friends of Pettway as well as the true parents of Carlina White, who was stolen from Harlem Hospital when she was only 19 days old.
The 50-year-old Pettway had pleaded guilty to kidnapping in February, describing how she one day in 1987 took a train from her Connecticut home to the hospital, where she posed as a nurse and reassured White's mother, who had brought her daughter to the emergency room for treatment of a high fever.
The sentence was far less than the 20 years in prison recommended by prosecutors and the Probation Department, but it was within the 10 to 12? years agreed to by prosecutors and defense lawyers when a plea agreement was signed.
Castel scolded Pettway, telling her she had "inflicted a parents' worst nightmare on a young couple," caused other parents to fear child kidnappings and led hospitals to install preventive measures to avoid similar kidnappings.
He said it was "not a crime of greed, of vengeance. But it was an act of selfishness, a crime of selfishness."
Pettway apologized, saying she was "deeply sorry for what I have done" and sought to "right my wrong and to ask for forgiveness."
Carl Tyson, the biological father, glared at Pettway, saying: "You hurt me really bad."
Joy White, the mother, said her daughter had found her but: "I still haven't found my daughter."
She said she "can't change how my daughter feels" when she talks about Pettway's relatives as if they are her own.
"My daughter is here, but she's not home yet," she said.
Outside court, Tyson said the sentence "should have been longer," but White said she was satisfied.
"If they gave her 200 years, it's still not going to make up for the time my daughter was gone," she said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea L. Surratt said Pettway told "complicated lies" for 23 years.
In court papers, she challenged Pettway's lawyers' contention that she provided a "stable, loving and happy home," saying Pettway was convicted of five crimes while Carlina was in her custody and had confessed to cocaine use from 1983 through 2005.
In a letter to the judge, Pettway apologized, blaming untreated psychological disorders from her failed pregnancies.
"It may not sound correct on paper but I am hopelessly SORRY," her handwritten note said.
White has described encountering Pettway on the day her daughter disappeared, dressed like a nurse. "She came up to me and said to me, 'Don't cry. Your daughter is going to be OK.'"
The case was solved by Carlina herself.
As she grew up in Connecticut under the name Nejdra Nance, the girl became increasingly suspicious of her own identity. Pettway ultimately told her a part-truth, admitting she was someone else's daughter but claiming she had been willingly given away by a drug addict.
Carlina White said she browsed the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for clues to her identity. After matching a photo of herself with one on the site, she tracked down her true mother and they reunited in January 2011. A DNA test confirmed they were mother and child.
Joy White declined to comment about Carlina White's absence from court Monday.
In court papers, defense lawyers Robert Baum and Sabrina Shroff called Pettway "broken and severely depressed."
The lawyers said Carlina White declined to speak at the sentencing because she didn't want to go back to court and felt she had done enough work finding her biological parents.
They also noted that she is represented by counsel and has a movie project in the works.

HARRISBURG ? Small-business owners in?Pennsylvania?working to prevent pollution and save money may now apply for a Small Business Advantage Grant through the Department of Environmental Protection.
Businesses can apply for 50-percent matching funds of up to?$9,500?to adopt or acquire energy-efficient or pollution-prevention equipment or procedures.
?This program helps small businesses secure energy-efficient means to conduct their day-to-day operations,? DEP Secretary?Mike Krancer?said. ?Becoming more energy-efficient will not only reduce environmental impacts, but also make?Pennsylvania?s small businesses more competitive.?
Applicants must be a for-profit corporation, limited liability corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship or other legal entity with 100 or fewer full-time employees. The grant-supported project must be in a?Pennsylvania?facility owned by the applicant and must save the business at least 25 percent, plus?$750?annually in energy or pollution-related expenses.
Applicants may be manufacturers, retailers, service providers, mining operators or agricultural businesses. Eligible projects include HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting, solvent recovery systems, waste recycling systems and auxiliary power units deployed as anti-idling technology for trucks.
The application deadline is?Sept. 26. Eligible applications will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.

ComicBooked.com readers might remember Ltd. from the Hey Geek Girl art exhibit that was guest-curated by the lovely Bonnie Burton, and covered here on our site (check it out). The gallery opened in late 2010 and has been host to a non-stop series of brilliant art exhibits, not limited to but including: MINTcondition during the 2012 Emerald City Comicon, and most recently, the inspired Rayguns and Robots show. So what does Ltd. Art Gallery have in store for us next?
Enter the latest exhibit, POSTALGIA, a solo art show from Steve Thomas, which draws on the influences of retro movie, television, and video game pop culture icons from the 80s and 90s. You might know Mr. Thomas from his nerdgasmic work for such licenses as: Marvel Comics, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Muppets, Disney, and more! Here?s a little background about Steve Thomas from the bio on his website:
?Before becoming a freelance illustrator/graphic artist, I worked for newspapers creating graphics and illustrations for 14 years. I did work for every section of the paper from ?Life and Entertainment? to ?Sports.?
?
?Now, I try to come up with new and interesting ideas for illustrations. My love for vintage poster, propaganda, and product art from the early 20th century, and an interest in retro-futuristic art from the mid-20th, has led me to create some cool poster art. I mean, who doesn?t want to travel the solar system or join the fight against the villains of 1980s arcade games??
So what can we expect from this exhibit? A hefty dose of iconic, propaganda-infused art featuring a Death Star?s worth of Star Wars, with some Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, Breakfast Club, Flash Gordon, Ferris Bueller, and MANY other beloved subjects thrown in for good measure. Check out the preview below for a more visual representation of Steve Thomas? artwork that will be featured in POSTALGIA.

For the 22nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Kessler Foundation and the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development released a new research brief on disability employment. "Strategies to Support Employer-Driven Initiatives to Recruit and Retain Employees with Disabilities" explores a growing trend among employers to establish initiatives to increase the participation of workers with disabilities in their workplaces. Authors are Elaine Katz, MS, CCC-SLP of Kessler Foundation, Meg O'Connell of the National Organization on Disability (NOD), and Robert Nicholas, PhD, of the Heldrich Center.
These initiatives involve partnerships with local workforce and disability service organizations. Coordinated by a single agency (or small number of agencies), employers gain access to assistance and support services for recruitment, training, and job retention for employees with disabilities. This new brief, one in a series on disability and employment, examines the successful partnership initiatives that have enabled employers to hire people with disabilities. "These initiatives are resulting in integrated workforces where people with and without disabilities work side by side," said Katz, "and employers are reporting benefits in their workplaces and to their bottom lines."
The brief profiles the following successful disability employment initiatives:
Walgreens Distribution Centers, which exceeded its target of hiring 30% of its Anderson, NC center's workforce through a partnership with disability service providers, and found that efficacy increased by 20%.
The NOD's Bridges to Business program, which helped Lowe's establish a successful and sustainable hiring initiative for its distribution centers.
The Connecticut Bureau of Rehabilitation Services' Industry-Specific Training and Placement Program, which provided grants to five community rehabilitation providers to partner with major employers, eg, Lowe's, HomeGoods, Mohegan Sun Casino, CVS and Walgreens.
Wal-Mart's partnership with Project SEARCH, a school-to-work transition program, provides real-life work experiences that help young adults with disabilities explore careers and sample jobs that suit their skills and interests. Wal-Mart was the first to license Project SEARCH for distribution centers. Project SEARCH's host employers also include banking, hospitals, and government agencies.
Reddwerks, a software company based in Austin, Texas, which responded to the needs created by disability employment initiatives. Reddwerks' disability-friendly distribution management systems software has enabled employers to expand their pool of job candidates with disabilities.
Tailoring disability employment initiatives helps businesses identify workers with the skills needed to fill new employment opportunities. The brief also examines how state officials, local service and support agencies, and employers can foster continued growth of initiatives that meet workforce needs while providing jobs for people with disabilities.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The head of a planned African Union force to hunt warlord Joseph Kony says he has not started work because he doesn't have troops or equipment.
Ugandan Col. Dick Olum, whose appointment was announced in February, spoke to The Associated Press from Yambio, South Sudan, on Wednesday as U.N. and AU officials gathered in Uganda to plan regional efforts to catch Kony and dismantle his Lord's Resistance Army.
Olum said the Kony hunt was still in the hands of some 2,000 Ugandan soldiers and 500 South Sudanese troops. The AU force was to have at least 5,000 troops.
Kony's group is notorious for forcibly recruiting boys and girls who then become soldiers or wives for commanders.
U.S. President Barack Obama has sent 100 U.S. troops to Central Africa to help in the manhunt.
I?m a stay at home mom with a one-year-old little boy.? Despite the fact that I?m a freak about my son?s nap schedule (when he sleeps we all sleep, and MAMA needs her sleep!), the phrase ?stay-at-home? is a misnomer for us.? Neither of us, me or my son, could stay at home all the time. ?So, here are a few relatively inexpensive ways to either a.) get out of the house with your LO, or b.) socialize with other moms and their offspring.
PLAYDATES, PLAYDATES, PLAYDATES I know, it?s obvious, right?? Well, it wasn?t that easy for me.? I didn?t have many fellow SAHM friends, our local kids? play-place closed down; how was I supposed to have a playdate?? Basically, I got bold.? I found a local mom?s listserv.? I literally emailed the group and said, ?I don?t know that many moms; can I join your playgroup??? I had several moms in the same boat email me back, we formed our own playgroup, and we?re currently becoming good friends!? One tip: I know it?s difficult to make plans when you have a baby- nap schedules can be inconsistent.? However, if you do make plans with other mamas for a date, do try your darndist to show up consistently.? The moms will understand when you just can?t, but you?re not going to make lasting friendships if you?re not actually there.
WATER, WATER, WATER Another no-brainer, right?? But, seriously, how else are you going to enjoy the outdoors with a baby in July?? A few days ago I got talked into going to our local reservoir (we have a lack of large bodies of water in Colorado) for a little dip.? It was a blast!? Granted, the next day, the res. shut down due to high levels of bacteria in the water, and I did, in fact, feel queasy, but whatever, right?? Concurrently, a friend of mine bought one of those water tables (on sale) and the babies LOVE to stand there and play with the toys getting wet.
FIND FUN WAYS TO PLAY INDOORS Find an indoor play-place for crawlers/new walkers to beat the heat.? There are a few options in our area.? One is our local indoor mall.? It?s great- air-conditioned, baby can play, and we can stroll around.? The second is a place called ?The Loft? (in case local Boulder moms don?t know) and it?s marketed as a ?caf?? for moms and little ones under 5.? It has a full-on crawler gym area.
Being a SAHM isn?t easy, so I try to make plans throughout the week to break it up for us and add some fun into our days.? If we have set plans for 3 of the 5 days of the work-week, we?re hitting our goal!? I hope you have a wonderful, plan-filled summer, and if you have other ideas for making it a great summer with a babies or toddlers, do share!

Although there is a definite ?voice? behind the offerings at Nonna?s Table, it?s really designed as a go-to spot for a customer who?s sophisticated or simply enthusiastic about great food. ?When I visited, a local called to make sure a few pieces of the day?s pizza were put aside for him. ?That speaks volumes to the kind of personal relationships built upon the delivery of high-quality products being nurtured at Nonna?s. It?s very local and very Italian.
