Toomer Elementary Hosts Open House for New East Lake and ...

May 29, 2012 at 3:30 pm

Dr. Nicole Evans Jones, Toomer principal, children and families planting elm tree donated by Trees Atlanta.

Transition and bonding events are taking place throughout APS to welcome new families?redistricted recently following the 2011-2012?Demographic and Capacity Study.? Particular attention was given recently?by the parents and staff at?Fred Armon Toomer Elementary to?new students?from East Lake and Whitefoord Elementary.

Ebony Henry, mother of Braelen Dory, rising 2nd grader from East Lake said, ?Happiness is about loving what you have and three communities coming together will result in an awesome school.? The Open House and Family Fun Day on May 17th hosted by Toomer Elementary for new families from East Lake and Whitefoord was well organized and exciting for all. Toomer?s principal, Dr. Nicole Evans Jones and East Lake?s interim principal, Mary Benton, began the Open House welcoming the children and their families. Toomer?s teachers guided the famileis on a school tour, followed by visiting the classroom of their upcoming grade level.

Ellen Buettner, mother of Sophia Buettner, rising Toomer 3rd grader said, ?The open house was so well organized. I think the students liked being able to go off to visit the classrooms by themselves. They were a little shy at first with the teachers, but most warmed up pretty quickly. It?s going to be a great school year at Toomer with all these great families!?

Engaging, hands-on activities facilitated by Toomer?s teachers allowed the?children to get a sneak peek into the grade level curriculum of their upcoming school year. Make-and-take projects were created to provide the?children?with souvenirs from their inaugural visit to Toomer Elementary.

Highlighting the conclusion of the event was a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the new family of Toomer Elementary, which combines Toomer Elementary, East Lake, and a portion of Whitefoord Elemetary school families. Trees Atlanta donated an elm tree planted on the playground by the?children and Toomer?s principal. ?It will grow to over 30 feet tall and provide shade as kids play and learn, which symbolizes the growing family we are beginning,? said Jones. The?children were so enthusiastic to help Toomer?s principal plant the tree and play in the dirt!

Via Smith, mother of Kelvin Simmons, rising 4th grader from East Lake Elementary said, ?Transition is defined as the process of changing from one state to another. After tonight, I feel the transition from East Lake to Toomer will be a smooth one.?

To further the bond and strengthen the new school community of Toomer Elementary School, the?open house was followed by two weekend events. The students and families from all schools were invited on Saturday to attend the annual Kirkwood Spring Fling, sponsored by the Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization, and on Sunday, the East Lake Schools Coalition hosted an ice cream social at the East Lake Community Learning Garden.

Dolphins to appear on 'Hard Knocks' this summer

(AP) ? The Miami Dolphins will appear on "Hard Knocks" this summer.

HBO announced Tuesday that the Dolphins would be the newest subject of its popular reality series documenting NFL training camps. The seventh season premieres Aug. 7, with four more one-hour episodes airing on subsequent Tuesdays.

Coming off a 6-10 season, Miami has a new coach in Joe Philbin. He said the Dolphins' involvement in the show was a football decision made with the blessing of owner Stephen Ross.

"Our owner supported this decision but in no way, shape or form forced us to make the decision," Philbin said in South Florida following an offseason practice Tuesday. "It's a chance to show the new direction and identity of this football team, where we're headed, and at the same time connect with our past, the great tradition and heritage we have here in Miami."

This season marks the 40th anniversary of the Dolphins' undefeated championship squad ? the last NFL club to win the Super Bowl with a perfect record. Miami's most recent title came a year later, in 1974.

"Hard Knocks" was not produced last year because of the NFL lockout. In 2010, the Dolphins' AFC East rivals, the New York Jets, were the subject of the show, making coach Rex Ryan a reality star.

"It's a great opportunity to connect with our fans, for the people who aren't going to be able to come out here daily in 110-degree heat index weather and watch our guys participate in training camp," Philbin said.

This is the first time "Hard Knocks" will feature a rookie head coach. Philbin was the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator the past five years, tutoring Aaron Rodgers and winning a Super Bowl. Philbin has a heart-wrenching back story ? his 21-year-old son drowned just before the longtime NFL assistant took the Dolphins job.

Miami will likely have a highly drafted rookie quarterback competing for playing time. Ryan Tannehill was the eighth pick overall, joining a franchise desperate for QB stability since Dan Marino retired.

UFC 146 bonuses and awards for 'Dos Santos vs Mir' fights in Las Vegas

money

UFC 146: "Dos Santos vs. Mir" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, has officially wrapped, which means it's time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $70,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card, and it's probably no surprise who's headed home with a second sack of simoleons.

In a shocker, Roy Nelson was awarded "Knockout of the Night" honors for unloading some heavy artillery at Dave Herman in their heavyweight hoedown on the main card on pay-per-view (PPV). "Big Country" went wide with a haymaker, it connected, and "Pee-Wee" went night night.

Nelson wasn't the only one awarded "Knockout of the Night" honors, however. Indeed, his old buddy and training partner, Dan Hardy, was also slipped a big bonus check for his first round sleeping of Duane Ludwig on the FX broadcasted portion of the preliminary card.

Maybe it was just a monetary "thank you" for justifying Lorenzo Fertitta's decision not to cut him.

"Submission of the Night" was no easy task as three men impressively caused taps, naps, and snaps. So instead of actually making a difficult decision, UFC President Dana White decided to give out two.

The first went to Paul Sass for putting a sock in Jacob Volkmann by grabbing an arm and taking it home with him. Sorry, folks, no post-fight promo on Barack Obama this time.

Stefan Struve was also rewarded handsomely for making quick work of Strikeforce import Lavar Johnson. "Big" was knocking heads off since making his way to the Octagon but "The Skyscraper" put an end to that by nearly ripping his arm off just over one minute into the contest.

And thanks to double dipping on the first two, a "Fight of the Night" bonus was not given out. Pooey.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 146:

Star-divide

Knockout of the Night -- Roy Nelson

Knockout of the Night part deux -- Dan Hardy

Submission of the Night -- Stefan Struve

Submission of the Night part deux -- Paul Sass

Fight of the Night -- None

Again, each fighter received $70,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

As Edwards jury deliberates, how long is too long?

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? With the jury at the John Edwards trial set to begin deliberations for a seventh day on Tuesday, speculation grows that the 12 people charged with deciding the fate of the former presidential candidate may be deadlocked.

Edwards faces six felony charges in a case involving nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy political donors to help hide the Democrat's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

To determine Edwards' guilt or innocence, the jury must sift through notes from 17 days of testimony and review about 500 trial exhibits, many of them voluminous phone and financial records. They must not only determine whether the candidate knew about the secret payments, which he has denied, but whether he realized he was violating federal law by allowing them.

That requires the jury to navigate a web of laws so complicated that even campaign finance experts disagree on whether the money used in the cover-up qualify as political contributions, which were then limited to $2,300 per person. Although U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles said the issue appeared straightforward to her, the jury instructions took nearly an hour to read and left many on the jury looking dazed.

"This is a pretty complex chore," said Kieran J. Shanahan, a former federal prosecutor turned defense attorney who has attended nearly every day of the trial. "There's a lot to digest and come to an agreement on. One full week of deliberations is nothing to hit the panic button on. But if it goes another week, that indicates the likelihood of a split verdict or hung jury."

Federal law defines campaign contributions as money given with the intent of influencing the outcome of an election. But neither of the donors who gave the money testified about their thinking on the issue.

Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, a 101-year-old heiress, was deemed too frail to travel to court. Those involved in the scheme said she had no idea much of the $725,000 she funneled to an Edwards aide for a "personal expense" was being spent on concealing an extramarital affair.

Fred Baron, a wealthy Texas lawyer who served as Edwards' campaign finance chairman, paid for flights on private jets, luxury hotel rooms and a $20,000 rental mansion in California. He died of bone cancer in late 2008.

Edwards, a former trial lawyer, decided not to take the stand in his own defense. His mistress, Rielle Hunter, was not called to testify.

The jurors deliberate in a windowless conference room, their privacy protected by U.S. Marshals. Their lunch is catered inside.

The group of eight men and four women mostly come from middle-class backgrounds, including a retired fireman, a special education teacher, a plumber, a retired railroad engineer and two mechanics. There are also jurors with strong financial acumen, including a corporate vice president and a retired accountant.

High-profile juries that acquitted a defendant usually did so quickly.

It took less than a day last year for Florida jurors to find Casey Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. That was after 33 days of testimony, 400 pieces of evidence and 90 witnesses.

The jury that acquitted football star O.J. Simpson of his former wife, Nicole, and her friend Ronald Goldman, made their decision in less than four hours.

And while it is true deliberations lasting several days or even weeks often end in deadlocks, there are examples where juries took a long time to return a guilty verdict.

The jury at the first trial of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich deliberated 14 days before a mistrial was declared on 23 corruption counts, though they did convict him on one count of making false statements.

Undeterred, federal prosecutors tried Blagojevich again. During his second trial, it took jurors 10 days to convict him on 17 counts of corruption.

The judge at Edwards' trial abruptly closed the courtroom Friday to talk to attorneys about an issue with a juror. She reopened the courtroom after 35 minutes, giving the public no details about what the problem was before sending everyone home for the long holiday weekend.

The jury's behavior drew attention Thursday when the four alternates all wore canary-yellow shirts. On Friday, they all wore bright red shirts, as did two of the 12 jurors deliberating the case.

One of the alternates, a young woman, has also frequently exchanged smiles with Edwards and nodded enthusiastically during closing arguments last week as the former presidential candidate's lawyer urged them to find his client not guilty.

Eagles can dismiss an alternate juror without affecting the trial. But if she dismisses one of the 12 deliberating the case and an alternate takes over, the discussions would have to start all over.

The judge said she would start court early Tuesday to talk about the issue further.

Steve Friedland, a former federal prosecutor and professor at Elon University School of Law, said those waiting for resolution should remain patient.

"Jury verdicts are not always like fast food, delivered neatly wrapped in short order," he said. "Instead, verdicts are sometimes like a fine meal that takes a long time to prepare. That is what is occurring in the Edwards case, and the result may be all the better for it."

Climate change allows once-rare British butterfly to thrive

Although it's well known that climate change can prompt plants and animals to shift the ranges in which they live, the brown argus (Aricia agestis) has widened its living quarters with unusual speed, according to an analysis of decades of data collected by British volunteers.

Warming has allowed the brown argus butterfly to rapidly expand its range in England and Wales.

Warming in Great Britain appears to have given a little brown and orange butterfly an edge. The brown argus butterfly has spread about 49 miles (79 kilometers) northward on the island over 20 years, observations indicate.

Although it's well known that?climate change can prompt plants and animals?to shift the ranges in which they live, the brown argus (Aricia agestis) has widened its living quarters with unusual speed, according to an analysis of decades of data collected by British volunteers.

The butterfly's secret??A new host plant to feed its larvae.

In cooler periods, the larvae feed on the rockroses growing in warm spots, mostly on southerly facing, chalky hillsides, said study researcher Jane Hill, an ecologist at the University of York.

The same butterflies living on continental Europe also feed on geraniums, but, historically, the British brown argus larvae rarely lived on these plants. Now observations collected by volunteers indicate this changed in the 1990s, when average summer temperatures reached unprecedented warmth.

Then, the brown argus butterflies began to show up more often at sites where all potential host plants were geraniums. [Butterfly Gallery: Beautiful Wings Take Flight]

A genetic mutation or physiological change in the butterflies is unlikely, Hill said, rather it appears that warmer temperatures simply allowed them to incorporate a new host plant. (The butterflies have continued using rockroses).

Once the brown argus butterflies can establish populations on their favorite geranium, called dove's-foot cranesbill, they can spread quickly among these common plants. Other dynamics, such an escape from parasites at rockrose sites, helped out, the researchers write in an article published in Friday's (May 25) issue of the journal Science.

"It is a bit of a good news story, and we don't get many of those," Hill said. The caveat, she added, is that the butterfly's range may well be retracting in parts of its range outside of England and Wales, where the observations used in this study were collected.

The stupid things you do on Facebook -- and how to fix them

By Adam Dachis
Lifehacker

Reluctantly or otherwise, Facebook is the place most of us have chosen to share our lives online. In spite of its many useful features, the social media site can be a constant source of annoyance, embarrassment and trouble if you make a few stupid decisions you might not even realize you're making. Fortunately, with a little effort, you can get Facebook under your control.

Courtesy of Lifehacker

Stupid thing #1: You don't regularly audit your approved apps
How many applications have you approved on Facebook? There are probably a few you don't even know about. When, for example, someone auto-shares an article through a news app (which has the potential to be hilarious and embarrassing), you have to approve the app just to read that article. The same goes for answering survey questions, participating in games and basically interacting with half the stuff your friends post to their news feeds.

The problem: Apps have a lot of access to your personal data. You don't know exactly what they're seeing or what they're doing with it, so it's important you audit your apps once a month to ensure you haven't inadvertently approved anything you don't want or forgotten about an app you don't use anymore.

The solution: Auditing is pretty easy to accomplish. To start, visit your app settings pageand you'll be presented with a list of the apps you're supposedly using. Facebook attempts to order the apps by how recently you've authorized them, but in my experience it tends to get a few things wrong. Nonetheless, go through the list of apps and delete anything that you don't recognize or don't want anymore by clicking the X by its name. You'll also see an Edit link that will display detailed information about what the app can do, plus a few settings. If you want to restrict an app without deleting it, just click that Edit link and change what you want. Changes are saved as you make them, so you don't have to worry about saving.

Once you're done, your app list will be nice and tidy. Just make sure you mark a day on your calendar next month to do it again. You might be surprised by what you'll find.

Courtesy of Lifehacker

Stupid thing #2: You don't filter your news feeds
The problem: Is your news feed a long list of crap you don't want to dig through to find the few posts you actually want to read? You may have too many friends ? which we'll get to next ? but it's more likely that you're not filtering anything at all.

The solution: Facebook does a decent job of deciding what's important and what's not, but your help is necessary. If you have a friend who posts mostly crap to your news feed, you can tell Facebook to filter out anywhere from some to all of their posts. Just hover over their message in your feed and click the downward-facing triangle on the upper-right side. You'll see that you're subscribed to the person who posted the message and you have the option to receive All Updates, Most Updates, or Only Important Updates so Facebook knows how much to show you. Additionally, you can unsubscribe from that person's updates altogether (without unfriending them), or just from their comments and likes. In fact, you can even unfollow from the notification alerts menu, too. This is a great way to build a news feed without constant posts from people who annoy you.

If these filtering options aren't good enough, you'll want to check out a great extension called SocialFixer. It provides exceptional filtering options. We'll talk about it more a little later, but if you want to learn more about it right now go check out our guide.

Coutesy of Lifehacker

Stupid thing #3: You don't manage your privacy settings
The problem: Facebook and privacy haven't always gotten along swimmingly, but if you put in a little effort you can mostly control how Facebook uses and shares your data. You want to exert this control Facebook has provided because you're setting yourself up for disaster if you don't. The most common and obvious issue is that employers use Facebook to check out prospective hires. With so much information publicly available, it's not only cheaper than a background check but often better as well. Despite the risks, 13 million people have yet to even touch their privacy settings. It should go without saying, but this is pretty stupid.

The solution: Managing your Facebook privacy is not hard to do. If you don't want to waste a lot of time, you can always err on the safe side and lock down as much as possible. Just visit your privacy settings pageand don't allow anything at all. This will reduce Facebook's functionality, of course, but you won't have to worry too much about exposing private information. That said, putting in a little more effort can get you the best of both worlds. You'll have to spend a little time figuring out the exact settings you want and then taking the time to update those settings on a regular basis. To stay abreast of everything you need to know about managing your Facebook privacy, bookmark our always up-to-date guide.

Stupid thing #4: You complain about Facebook features you hate but don't fix them
The problem: A Facebook update rarely goes by without a few people creating petitions to change it back. Regardless of whether or not these petitions are legitimate, if you don't like a given feature you can remove it yourself.

The solution: All it takes is one extension: SocialFixer. The extension works on practically every web browser and can get rid of just about anything you hate. Our guide will walk you through all of its features, but here are a few examples:

  • Turn off the chat bar
  • Always show both your Facebook message inboxes
  • Prevent Facebook from auto-loading posts
  • Filter out messages you don't want to see
  • Turn off timeline (for yourself)

Those are just a few of the many options available. If there's something you don't like about Facebook, don't complain about it. Just get SocialFixer and take care of the problem yourself.

Courtesy of Lifehacker

Stupid thing #5: You friend everybody
The problem: Facebook began as a private club for Harvard students, slowly opening up to other schools and, eventually, the world. It was designed so you could add friends that were actually your friends. When the social media site ballooned into what it is today, you'd end up with friend requests from people you hardly know or met online. Not only did this end up creating an unmanageably large friend list, but you'd end up sharing personal information with people you don't really know. Many of us are now stuck with bloated friends lists that are too difficult to manage because we didn't realize the problem until it was too late, and studies are finding that this is actually making us unhappy. Fortunately, there's a simple way to get your enormous friend count to something more reasonable.

The solution: Send out a message to all your "friends" to let them know you're cleaning house. Post a message to your wall saying that you're cleaning house, asking anyone who wants to remain "friends" to send you a message to let you know. Post this message a few times over the course of a week and keep a list of anyone who sends you a request to stay. Additionally, visit your Facebook notifications pageto see who you've interacted with to help you figure out who else you want to keep around. Once you've got a good list together and a week or two has passed, it's time to start deleting. This can take a long time if you do it manually, but a GreaseMonkey script called FacebookDeletescan make the process much easier. The script allows you to batch-delete Facebook friends by entering in the friends you want to keep. It'll take care of getting rid of the rest. Once you're done, you'll have cleaned house and only have the people on your list.

Mistakes can be made, of course, so if you don't want to completely rid yourself of the not-quite-friends on your list you should turn on subscriptions for your account. This will turn anyone who sends you a friend request into a subscriber, regardless of whether or not you accept it. This way they can have access to any public information you post but nothing you want to keep private.

Stupid thing #6: You let Facebook spam your email inbox with notifications
The problem: Facebook likes to keep you on Facebook, and one way of doing that is emailing you tons of notifications whenever anything happens. It doesn't matter if it's the epitome of minutiae ? it's a reminder that you should be wasting more time on their social media monopoly. These notifications can be useful, as you probably do want to know when some things happen, but they're overwhelming if you're getting too many. The upside is that notifications are pretty easy to manage with just a few alterations to your settings.

The solution: To get started, visit your Facebook notification settings page. At first you might be a little overwhelmed because there are a lot of options, but it's not as bad as you may think. Under the "All Notifications" header you'll see a list of categories. Expand them all and you'll see several conditions that will cause you to receive an email or even a text message. In my opinion, the best way to start is by turning off every notification in every category. Once you've done that, go back through the list and decide what you actually want to receive. The list is long and you may grow a little impatient when deciding what you want, so if everything is unchecked you'll end up with fewer enabled notifications if you start rushing through the list. If you do forget to turn something on that you care about, you can always go back and change it later.

Another (and, I think, better) option is turning off all of your notifications and creating a daily digest of updates. This way you only receive one email per day with a bunch of relevant Facebook activity. You get all the same information, but it's consolidated into a single message. For something in between, check out The Friend Mail, which can also create a daily digest but will notify you about birthdays and important events more urgently. However you prefer to get Facebook updates in your email, there's a way to make it happen.

Stupid thing #7: You spend all of your time on Facebook
The problem:How much of your time do you spend on Facebook? Apparently a lot of it. It's kind of amazing you're not on Facebook right now. There's also a very good chance you found this post via Facebook. Facebook, Facebook, Facebook! Although it can be a fun distraction, it's probably one of the best procrastination tools you've got. Even one visit per day can derail your productivity. If Facebook is getting in the way of getting things done, it's probably time to quit ? but not really.

The solution: You can quit Facebook without actually quitting Facebook, effectively making it a lot less distracting. This means disabling a lot of features and locking down your privacy settings (as we've previously discussed). If that's too much for you, start tracking the time you spend onlineand see when you use Facebook the most. Doing so can help you reclaim your time and start using it more effectively. This way you can still use Facebook, but you can avoid it at the times it hurts your productivity the most. If you can pull that off, you'll get the best of both worlds.

But wait, there's more!
Facebook can be a breeding ground for a lot of stupid choices and plenty of mistakes ? we just didn't have enough room or time to list them all. Here are a few more if you want to go even further:

And the list could go on.

Story Updated: May 25, 2012 at 6:23 PM MDT

BILLINGS - The community is rallying behind a family that lost their home in a fire Saturday.

The Hagen's house on Vandaveer Road went up in flames at 7:15 Saturday night. Firefighters said the house is a total loss, but no damage estimates are available yet. A few local businesses are now joining forces to host a benefit for the family.

"Even in a recession, no matter what goes on, when somebody falls on hard times people just automatically pull together. I just think Billings is the best place to live, and we've got the greatest community that pulls together for each other a lot," organizer, John Blair said.

The benefit will take place June 16th. It starts at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m. at the Blue Creek Fire Department. Food and entertainment will be available. They also hope to hold a silent auction. If you would like to help out, please call 259-0909.

Motherhood: Ignoring the Judgements of Others (and Not Passing ...

Welcome to Moms? Month on Dr. Stephanie! This month I will be featuring guest posts from some awesome moms around the country.? They will be sharing tips, tricks, and funny stories about motherhood.? This will be a fun celebration ? thanks for joining us!? Today?s author is Karyn Dundorf.? Welcome, Karyn!

Hi! I?m Karyn, stay at home mom of (almost) 3.? (I once had a career as an engineer, and hope to have a career in the future, but for now find joy ? most of the time ? being home with the kiddos).

I am writing this commentary on motherhood from the perspective of a mother with young children.? Right now I have a 4 year old, an almost 2 year old, and an almost here baby (Editor?s note: Karyn had a healthy baby girl a couple of weeks ago ? congrats Karyn and family!).? I?m sure one day I will look back and shake my head at some of the theories and assumptions about parenting I made at this time in my life, but this is where I am now and my ?advice? goes out to all others with small ones.

First of all, be gentle with yourself.? It?s so easy as a woman, but especially as a mother, to put all sorts of expectations on yourself.? You talk to one mother and you worry that your child is not signed up for gymnastics or Chinese, the next interaction you feel guilty for whatever food you have just fed your child, and the third playdate reminds you that your house is a hazard and somehow you still haven?t lost the baby weight.? Each mother is different and each child is different (mine for sure are different!).? I found myself constantly beating myself up over what I was doing wrong.? Here?s the deal: we?ll all make mistakes.? We will ALL do stuff wrong.? But as long as you LOVE your children and you let them know they are loved, then you have done your best.

Secondly, be flexible and learn to laugh.? All the things I planned for, proved not to be an issue.? All the things I didn?t plan for, did happen.? You can read all the books, do all the research, but nothing will prepare you for your actual child.? Heck, even my first child did not prepare me for my second child and I expect the third will throw me all sorts of new curve balls.? I love sleep, yet I didn?t get 3 hours of sleep in a row for somewhere around a year with my firstborn.? My first born responds to logic, my second thinks logic is, well, silly and something to be ignored.? My first had sensory issues and feeding was an issue.? The second has no sensory issues and yesterday I found him playing with feces.? There are times that the challenges make you want to cry.? Sometimes crying is good, but it worries toddlers when Mommy cries, so it?s often best to just laugh.

Thirdly: There is a lot of judgement out there.? The term ?mommy wars? gets used a lot.? The judgement gets old. It helps no one.? Do your best to ignore judgement and not to pass any on.? We?re all doing our best!

Lastly, motherhood is hard work.? It?s wonderful work, but it?s hard.? If you?re an introvert, you?re around a non-stop chatterbox and never get a moment to think.? If you?re an extrovert, you have that same chatterbox, but you never get a real conversation in.? It can take years (literally) to have a full night sleep.? It?s not about you.? It?s never about you.? A lot of? your identity will be wrecked during your child?s infancy.? Your body is wrecked, you are sleep deprived, and complete sentences are hard to form.?? (I?m hoping that after the initial year you can get some of it back? or at least I hope to one day have at least one uninterrupted and coherent thought).? There are days that you want to pull every. single. hair out of your head.? And then, your child smiles at you, or tells you they love you, or just giggles at a cat walking past the window and everything is better and every single sacrifice worth it.

Design a Wedding Ring | Millionaire Article Directory

?

By Matt Henderson

When people decide to invest the remainder of their life together there are two customs that appear consistent in most relationships, marriage ceremonies and wedding jewelry. Although most think women are the ones in love with the wedding process, the truth is men get just as anxious and excited as well. One of the first major purchases for couples ends up being their wedding rings. Surely you can walk up to just about any jewelry store and grab an ?off the line? ring, but to spice it up you should choose a custom designed wedding ring that matches your personal taste. After all, your wedding is not off a factory line so why grab a ring that a million other people can have?

Custom rings are a nice choice because if you have an heirloom ring or loose stones you can revamp them or incorporate them into your design. Loose gold with personal meaning or other jewelry can also be melted down and fashioned into rings that have personal meaning and representation. It changes the way you view a ring when you know it represents more than the willingness to splurge your hard earned cash on the one you love.

Another aspect is that you can use an exotic combination of diamond cuts or gems. Two diamond cut stones flanking a heart with teardrop sapphires off the ends is not a combination you will find at any store, but you can still have it if you want. The style can change for his and her choices as well. This lets both members of your relationship have a voice and emotional investment in the creation of your rings.

They key is to find a good place to help design your wedding ring. So, if you want to design a wedding ring for your marriage these are three good picks:

1) The Jewelry Exchange is a fantastic option but there may or may not be one in your area. They have a low price guarantee and widely advertise the fact that they carry loose stones. Also they are very committed to custom design. Staffing at their locations tends to be huge so you should have no trouble getting a little assistance when it is time to design wedding ring choices. The downside is that they may have a regimen that you will need to break through in order to get the specialized service you want.
2) Gemvara.com is an online choice which is nice because you can work with them no matter where you are. They provide free shipping so there are no worries of extra cost. Also, they guarantee your satisfaction 100 percent, so if you are not happy with the final product you have some recourse. The downside is that you are dealing at a distance. If you use them it may be a good idea to start the process with enough time to fix any issues.
3) Zales may be overpriced for the quality to some, but the benefit is that they are both online based and in almost every state as well. It is kind of like getting the best of both worlds. Also, if you are looking for a name you know and feel you can trust they are a good choice.

Whatever you decide, it is fulfilling to personally design a wedding ring choices. A custom ring is an heirloom. It will be in your family for years to come and its creation is a story that can be shared and passed on for generations.

'Mob Wives' Drita And Carla Read 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

'What is this? This is dirty!' Drita D'Avanzo exclaims after reciting a passage of 'Fifty Shades' for MTV News.

Filth or sensual fan fiction? It's impossible not to have an opinion on E L James' erotic New York Times best-seller "Fifty Shades of Grey." Single ladies, girlfriends and housewives have all been drawn to the steamy novel — not to mention "Mob Wives." VH1 reality star Carla Facciolo hasn't read the current "it" book, but she gets the gist of it.

"To me, it's like a sex book," she told MTV News in an attempt to describe the "50 Shades" phenomenon. "Grey is a guy that every girl wants; he's like a dream guy and he seduces."

Carla's synopsis was enough to whet the appetite of her "Mob Wives" pal Drita D'Avanzo, who immediately let her curiosity get the best of her. "I wanna read it," Drita blurted out.

Lucky for the reality-show beauty, MTV News had a copy of the book on hand for her to sample. "It's very intense," Carla warned.

Still, Drita opened the book and began her moment of "Fifty Shades" discovery. "Get off the bed, stand over here," D'Avanzo read from one of the book's later chapters, in which playboy Christian Grey introduces his naive lover Anastasia Steele to a kinky sexual experience. "He holds out his hand and in his palm are two shiny balls linked with a thick, black thread," Drita continued to read before she stopped herself, shocked by the sexual suggestiveness.

"What the f--- is this?" Drita questioned in her unmistakable Staten Island, New York, accent. "They're ass beads? What is this? This is dirty — what the hell is this?"

"Fifty Shades" wasn't Drita's cup of tea, but maybe she will change her mind when the book is adapted into a film (Universal Pictures has already secured the rights). "How do you even know about this, Carla?" she asked, chastising her buddy. "You, for even knowing about that book, I gotta think twice about you."

Carla had only one reasonable explanation: "It's the hottest book out right now."

Filth or sexy fan fiction? What do you think of "Fifty Shades of Grey"? Let us know in the comments!

SETI Pioneer Jill Tarter Retires

I am fairly certain that a lot of good work has been done by the SETI Institute in terms of science (e.g. consistent monitoring of parts of the RF spectrum and identifying new sources) and engineering (e.g. signal processing and distributed computing). Of course, I would also love to find an extraterrestrial funding.

But the Intelligent Funding has never been with SETI. When SETI started, we did not even know if extrasolar planets existed. Smart money would say that they did, since the abundance of stars in our galaxy alone puts the odds in favour of there being an awful lot of planets out there, but we only had a rough idea of how planetary systems formed based upon a sample of one. That left major gaps in our knowledge, such as the probability of finding a planet around any given star and what the composition of those planets would be. Even our present knowledge of extrasolar planets is skewed because of observational limitations.

There remain many limitations to the idea of searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. Searching for weak signals is challenging even if you knew what to look for and where to look. Because of that, I believe that the Intelligent Funding should be directed towards astronomical research that would lay down a foundation for a real SETI in the future. This would be things like finding and characterizing extrasolar planets, creating better models of star formation (particularly with respect to the protoplanetary disc), and getting a better handle on the chemistry of the objects that we are observing.

Red Sox top O's, climb back to .500

By DAVID GINSBURG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:51 p.m. ET May 23, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - Sporting a lineup top-heavy with sluggers, the Boston Red Sox got the power they needed from the bottom third of their batting order in a feel-good win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Daniel Nava and Kelly Shoppach hit sixth-inning homers to turn a tie game in Boston's favor, and newcomer Scott Podsednik also connected to help carry the Red Sox to a 6-5 victory Wednesday.

Nava batted seventh, Podsednik eighth and Shoppach last. The trio won't make anyone forget the home-run power of David Ortiz, Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis, but on this day they combined to go 6 for 9 with three homers, four RBIs and four runs.

The victory enabled the Red Sox to finish a grueling stretch of 20 games in 20 days with an 11-9 record, and thrust them back to .500 (22-22). Boston took two of three from the Orioles, who were seeking to win a fourth straight series against the Red Sox for the first time since 1960.

"The top part of the lineup has been doing so much work in 20 days, they were a little under the (weather) today," manager Bobby Valentine said. "The bottom third, (hitting coach) Dave Magadan has done such a fabulous job, we said, `Let's leave it to those guys to do it.' And they did."

It was 2-all in the sixth before Nava drove a 2-0 pitch from Jake Arrieta (2-5) over the right-field wall. Podsednik followed with a single, and Shoppach greeted Luis Ayala with a drive to left.

Nava and Shoppach each doubled their home run total for the season; the pair also connected on May 14 against Seattle.

Valentine revealed that the seldom-used Shoppach had griped about his lack of action less than 24 hours earlier.

"Let it be known he came in yesterday and wondered why he wasn't playing. He left angry," Valentine said. "I like him playing when he's angry, I guess."

Nick Johnson's second homer of the game, against Andrew Miller with a man on in the sixth, got Baltimore to 5-4. But Podsednik hit a solo shot in the eighth for a two-run cushion.

Acquired from Philadelphia on May 11 and summoned from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, Podsednik got two hits in his first start with Boston.

"It's good to get back and get my first start, contribute and get a couple runs," he said.

Wilson Betemit hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth off Vicente Padilla, and Alfredo Aceves got four straight outs for his 11th save in 13 chances.

And after that, the Red Sox began looking forward to a well-deserved day off.

"Amazing effort by a group of fabulous professionals who played through a lot of adversity - time zones, weather, travel," Valentine said. "They did one heck of a job winning the last two series. Going home at .500 is a feather in their cap."

Boston starter Daniel Bard (4-5) allowed two runs, five hits and four walks in 5 1-3 innings.

Johnson's first multihomer game since May 28, 2006, was not enough to prevent the first-place Orioles from losing for the third time in four games. With the potential tying run on second base in the eighth, Johnson ended the inning with a strikeout.

Talking about his homers, Johnson said, "Fastballs. Got some pitches. They were in the middle of the plate and I put some good swings on it."

Regarding the eighth inning, he said, "The last at-bat ... I just couldn't come through."

Arrieta gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings. He's winless in four starts since May 2.

"Well, I think four out of my six innings I allowed the leadoff guy on base," the right-hander said. "When you're pitching with a guy on and no outs to start off an inning, you put yourself in a tight situation."

Baltimore used the speed of leadoff hitter Xavier Avery to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Avery beat out a chopper in front of the plate, went to second on a single by Robert Andino and worked his way home by tagging up on two short fly balls, the last by Chris Davis.

Boston loaded the bases with no outs in the second but scored only one run, on a double-play grounder by Podsednik.

Johnson hit a drive into the right-field seats to start the bottom half, only the third home run allowed by Bard in eight starts this season.

Boston tied it at 2 in the third on a run-scoring double by Will Middlebrooks, but Kevin Youkilis was thrown out trying to score from first base on the two-out hit.

NOTES: Baltimore went 12-8 over the same 20-game stretch. ... Nava has 11 RBIs in 14 games since joining the Red Sox on May 10. ... Orioles LHP Zach Britton (shoulder) is set to begin his minor league rehabilitation assignment Saturday with Double-A Bowie. ... Baltimore's Adam Jones extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games. ... RHP Dylan Bundy, the Orioles' top amateur draft pick in 2011, was promoted to Class A Frederick from Class A Delmarva, where he went eight starts without giving up an earned run.
